How to Measure Your Windows

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
When redecorating, you may find yourself in need of window treatments, whether they are blinds, shades, drapes, or curtains. It is vital that you get accurate measurements before purchasing anything.

Steps

  1. Figure out if your product will be mounting on the inside of the frame or on the outside of the frame. Most curtains or drapes should be on the outside of the window, while shades and blinds are preferably inside the window frame. To mount inside, you typically need a minimum of one inch of depth.
  2. Measure the depth of your window. When measuring how deep your window is, it is vital that you measure in front of any obstructions. For example, if you have a double hung window, measure in front of the outer most window, not the recessed window pane. (This is normally the bottom half of the window.) If you have any latched or handles, you may also want to measure in front of those. An obstruction is anything that could get in the way of your product hanging or functioning properly.
  3. Measure inside width (side-to-side) You'll want to measure from inside edge to inside edge of the opening. It is crucial that you measure at three different points. (Windows, new or old, are not always even.) Measure the top, middle, and bottom points in the window. For inside width, take the smallest of the three measurements. If you take the largest, your product won't fit at the smaller points.
  4. Measure inside height (top-to-bottom). You'll want to measure from inside edge to inside edge of the opening. It is crucial that you measure at three different points. Measure the left, middle, and right points in the window. For inside height, take the largest of the three measurements. You'll want you product to reach the bottom of the window, otherwise there will be a gap.
  5. Measure outside width (side-to-side) and height (top-to-bottom). Be sure to include the frame in your measurements. Measure from the outside edge to outside edge of your frame. Check three points: top, middle, and bottom for width and left, middle, and right for height. For both width and height, you'll want to take the largest of the three measurements, otherwise a small portion of your trim will show.
  6. On outside mounts, consider whether you are mounting straight on the frame or on the wall above the frame. If you are mounting above the frame, you will need to add however many inches you need to mount to your height.

Tips

  • Pick a good tape measurer. Do not use a ruler of yard stick, they are never accurate. The best instrument would be an aluminum tape measurer that is at least 1" wide.
  • It is best to use a tape measurer that has 1/8" lines, accuracy is everything.
  • Don't attempt to measure large windows by yourself, if you can't reach both sides by yourself, ask for help. This will avoid possible errors.
  • You can find pictures and video instructions for measuring your windows at blindfinder.com.

Warnings

  • If you need to climb a ladder to measure your window make sure it is a sturdy ladder and always have someone there to monitor you. Safety first!
